Why Random Beats Manual

Manual group assignment introduces unconscious bias. Teachers tend to separate “troublemakers,” managers tend to balance skill levels — but these interventions can feel unfair to participants. Random assignment is transparently impartial: everyone can see that the groups were generated by an algorithm, not by someone’s opinion.

How Fair Is the Group Maker?

Uniform Random Shuffling

The Group Maker uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm, which is the gold standard for unbiased random permutation. Every possible grouping has exactly equal probability of being produced. Combined with the Web Crypto API for randomness, this means:

  • No name is more likely to end up in Group A vs Group B

What “Fair” Means Here

“Fair” in group generation means statistical uniformity by default — every participant has an equal chance under a plain shuffle. If you need strength balance, open Pots / strength balance, drag stronger players into Pot 1 (and others into Pot 2+), then generate: the tool spreads each pot across groups (best effort). Use Rules for keep-together / keep-apart constraints (including N names on one line who must not share a group).

Group Maker vs Other Methods

vs Counting Off (1-2-3-4)

The classic “count off by fours” method works but has issues:

Keep together / Keep apart

Under Rules you can:

  • Keep together — names on the same line stay in the same group (e.g. project partners).
  • Keep apart — one rule per line; comma-separated names (2 or more) are kept in different groups when possible. Example: Ali, Ayşe, Mehmet tries to place all three in separate groups.

Constraints are best-effort: if a set is larger than the number of groups, you may see a partial-satisfaction notice after generate.

Pots / strength balance

Turn on Balance by pots, then drag names from Unassigned into Pot 1, Pot 2, and so on (or paste into the paste panel). When you generate, the tool spreads each pot across groups so strong players are less likely to clump together. This is free — no account required.
